Could tethering be coming to iPad under iOS 4.2?

iOS 4.2 beta 2 for iPad, when used on some European carriers, is popping up Internet Tethering settings similar to those on iPhone. Since it’s not showing up everywhere, and certainly not in the US, could this mean only certain geographies will be getting the feature, or is it just some accident in the firmware [...]

Now that HDR photos (and video!) is the cool kids' latest documenting tool since Hipstamatic, iPhone 3GS owners have been feeling decidedly unhip without the app. It's almost enough for them to resort to film cameras again! More »

Wooden Wristwatches Embrace Anachronistic Time-Telling

Ask anyone, and they’ll say the kids today think wristwatches are a thing of the past: smartphones are so much more “now.” WEWOOD’s wooden watches forego touchscreens and brushed aluminum to embrace old-school craftsmanship and style.
Each watch costs about $120, and is made from Ebony, Maple, Guaiaco, or Red Wing Celtis woods. The Italian [...]

New Whitepaper Claims GPUs Threaten Malware Security

For the past 3.5 years or so, NVIDIA has ardently advocated the GPU as a computational platform capable of solving almost any problem. One topic the company hasn't targeted, however, is the tremendous performance advantage the GPU could offer malware authors. The idea that a graphics card could double as a security hole isn't something we've heard before, but according to a paper by Giorgos Vasiliadis, Michalis Polychronakis and Sotiris Ionnidis, it's an attack vector whose popularity could boom in coming years.

Amarok-based Clementine gets massive upgrade

Clementine is a great little audio player for Windows, and the recent update to version .5 has brought a lengthy list of new features. Not least among them is support for USB-connected MP3 players -- including iPods and iPhones!

My iPod touch 3G was recognized, but I couldn't get Clementine to establish a connection. My wife's little Sony E344, on the other hand, worked flawlessly.

What else has been added? There are better library control, organization, and sorting tools, automatic transcoding for connected MP3 players, and the ability to drag-and-drop songs between playlists. Want more? How about the ability to use a Wiimote to control Clementine?

Clementine's best new feature, however, has to be the All Glory to the Hypnotoad plug-in. Take the jump to see what it looks like, but don't stare too long -- lest you fall victim to the awesome powers of the Hypnotoad!

Pay a visit to the Clementine changelog for more details about what's new. Clementine runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux and is well worth a download.

Bookmarklet lets you destroy Web pages one element at a time, Asteroids style!

Filed under:

AdBlock is so lame. I mean, all it does it prevent ads from being displayed on Web pages. Where's the sport? Where are the explosions? I want some satisfaction from my advert eradication! Satisfaction like the kind you can only find in vintage arcade games.

Thankfully there's this incredibly practical bookmarklet that turns any website into a search-and-destroy mission. Click your button and the ship appears. You're then free to fly around and blast any element to pieces. So long, Eric Schmidt! Take that, Evony banner!

And no, I don't actually expect anyone to replace AdBlock with this. At least not until it comes with its own retro soundtrack and pew-pew noises...

Nintendo announces Wii Remote Plus with built-in MotionPlus tracking

As a follow-up to this morning's announcement, we now have some shots of Nintendo's colorful new Wiimote. Still no extra details, but what we do have is confirmation from Nintendo that they are indeed building the Wii Remote Plus, which combines a Wii Remote with its Wii MotionPlus gyro add-on into one Wii Remote-sized package. We spotted the controller in a FlingSmash bundle last week, the telltale "smile" text below the Wii logo, and now all we really need is a price and a launch date. Hopefully we'll be getting all of these colors when this lands in the US as well, but since this is a Japanese presentation that Nintendo is making this announcement, we can't be too sure.

Toshiba Sells E-books While Amazon Puts Kindle In A Browser

Don't get too excited when you hear the term "Kindle for the Web."  It's true that Amazon is making its Kindle book store visible through your browser but it's only letting you see previews, the first chapter of any given title. Meanwhile, Toshiba is also joining the ranks of e-book publisher with the launch of its store and free e-reader for Windows.  With Kindle for the Web, bloggers and website owners can embed a book preview into their sites (a function Google Books has offered for a year). They'll

EtherCodes is an interesting code editor for real-time collaboration

Filed under:

ethercodes

Finally, someone has gone and done it: EtherCodes is a mashup of EtherPad and Skywriter (formerly known as Bespin). In simple terms, it's a collaborative, real-time, Web-based code editor, with syntax highlighting for C, C++, C#, Java, PHP, Python, JavaScript, Ruby (yay!), and HTML.

It's currently in alpha, but I've played around with it, and it feels quite solid. It really feels like a hybrid. The familiar EtherPad interface surrounds a text area that is actually Skywriter. And Skywriter has its own command line, which lets you do all sorts of things to your code (convert all tabs to spaces, for example).

You don't get code completion, though, which is a shame. Also, for some reason, EtherCodes won't play nice with Opera -- it wants you to use Firefox 3.5+, Chrome 2.0+, or Safari 4.0+. I'm not really sure why, because Opera has a blazing-fast JavaScript engine. But all in all, I really like this mashup. Instead of trying to reinvent the wheel, it takes two established technologies and pairs them elegantly.

The mind behind EtherCodes is Gary Yao, who co-authored CKEditor (a well-regarded Rich Text editor for Web applications). I can only hope that EtherCodes will have the same kind of success. It is a much needed product, indeed.
